We fully understand the concerns expressed about any loss of trees in the village as a result of the important work to be carried out on flood defences in the playing fields. The EA will be carrying out further work this week to facilitate works but will not be removing any more trees

UPKEEP OF THE VILLAGEWe have recently received some negative feedback about the state of grass verges and other areas in the village. As most of you may recall, the mowing contract expired earlier this year and the new contract was put out to tender and was awarded to Newark and Sherwood District Council. Whilst we have received some positive comments about the standard of work performed, it has been clear that there were areas of the village where mowing had not been done. Earlier this week, we were able to meet with a representative from NSDC to discuss the contract. It seems that there has been some confusion as to which areas were to be mown and, hopefully, this has now been resolved.There has also been comment about the bank between the cricket pitch and the roundabout and Southwell Road. We have reminded NSDC that this is to be cut on a fortnightly basis and we have asked for a quotation to tidy up the shrub bed at the base of the bank. This is an area that we looked at a few years ago. It is a gateway to the village and should look smart. However, the original plans for the new roundabout meant that this area was to be subsumed into the highway and lost to the village. As a result, the area was left. We are reluctant to carry out extensive or expensive work in this area until the new roundabout has been completed but will see if this can be tidied up in the meantime. We hope that the issues have been resolved and are grateful to NSDC for their prompt response to our request for a meeting. As you know, the parish councillors are unpaid residents of the village and the Parish Council has no full-time employees, so we rely on people to report problems by emailing our clerk or contacting a councillor directly.

Further to our last post, we have had a further meeting over Teams to discuss the works that are to take place on the playing fields. The Parish Council was represented by Jacqueline Finn, Emma Wilson and Alison Glazebrook. The Trustees of the Village Hall and Playing Fields were represented by Geoff Burton. Alison is also the Parish Council representative on the Village Hall Committee. The Environment Agency was represented by Lucy Marsden and Eric Burgess.For people who have not been following developments, can we remind you that information about flooding and the planned protection works are available on the EA website and can be viewed by following the link below.https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/east-midlands/lowdham/ The current situation on the playing fields is that it is not anticipated that the main body of work will commence until August but some preparatory work will take place in advance of that date. It is hoped that the work will be finished by October. The work undertaken will be on a large scale and will be disruptive. Steel sheets will be driven into the left bank of the beck from an excavator which will have to sit in the channel. Trees have had to be removed and some will need to be pruned so that the arm of the machine can be swung safely. A photograph of the type of machine that will be used is attached so that you can more easily understand the scale of the proposed works. The EA will have to widen the access gate to the playing fields from the dual carriageway and will use the football pitch as a compound to store material and machinery. The football pitch will have to be stoned on a temporary basis. The cricket pitch will remain accessible throughout and a safe pedestrian right of way provided around the EA compound by the dual carriageway. For most of the time, the banks of the Cocker Beck will be inaccessible. Work will also be undertaken on the flood embankment between the playing fields and the dual carriageway.As you can imagine, the effects of all this will, on a temporary basis, be devastating but the EA and Parish Council are already starting to plan for the reinstatement of the area. The football pitch will be levelled and replanted. The banks and footpaths and hedgerow will be reinstated and planted. The trees that have been lost will be replaced with semi mature trees on a 1:5 ratio.The Parish Council hopes to take this opportunity to improve the appearance of the area.
