Your Parish Council Needs YouYou Lowdham Parish Council has vacancies for councillors. With only 7 members, the council is at risk of failure. If the council is unable to muster a quorum (4) for any meeting, then that meeting must be abandoned. We lost one meeting in 2023, being unable to get enough attendeesSo, what does the parish council do? It meets once a month, usually on the first Thursday of each month, except in August when there is no meeting. Each meeting starts at 6.45 pm and lasts about 2 hours, sometimes longer. The council is the first level (i.e. lowest) of local government. As such it does not have many powers, except that of raising funds through council tax. The agenda contains some standing items, but much of the time is spent on issues relevant to the village at the time. The flooding issues have been one of the main issues over the last 10 years or so, with planning applications coming a close second and traffic and parking not far behind. How do I become a councillor When there are vacancies (as there are now), new councillors can be co-opted by the council at its next meeting. Once co-opted, councillors will serve for the remainder of the term of the council. For Lowdham Parish Council, the term comes to an end in 2027, when all councillors will be up for re-election in early May.Please consider becoming a councillor. Without more volunteers there will come a point when the functions of the parish council become the responsibility of the district council, and their approach is inevitably going to be less tailored to the needs of the village and those who live in it.
